The Challenge & Solution

CARFAC Alberta has championed fair pay and artists' rights since 1996, but its aging WordPress site couldn't carry the organization's revenue or programming. We rebuilt it from the ground up as a 54-page platform with a design system as bold as the community it serves (hard ink borders, brutalist shadows, brand magenta) and wired the association's entire revenue stack directly into the site: eight membership tiers and six donation levels through Stripe, merchandise through a Snipcart cart, with twenty legacy redirects preserving years of accumulated search equity.

How It Was Built

The design system is pure craft: hand-drawn SVG motifs that sketch themselves in as you scroll (including a paintbrush that rides its own stroke), directional scroll reveals, and skewed advocacy marquees, all built without animation libraries and all respecting reduced-motion preferences. Type is set in Bricolage Grotesque over Figtree, with the brand's magenta leading a palette of grass green, sun yellow, and iris.

Under the hood it's a static Astro build served from Cloudflare's edge: five Zod-typed Markdown collections, a 598-entry typed member dataset, structured-data graphs for the organization, and a twenty-entry redirect map that carried every important WordPress URL to its new home. The resource library ships 27 downloadable guides, including an artist handbook offered in six languages.
